How the fund is structured
On October 18, Anthropic announced the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, an entity intended to receive 5% of the company’s shares subject to stockholder approval. It will be structured as a wholly owned LLC rather than a 501(c)(3) charity, allowing it to choose among grants, nonprofit donations and direct distributions to individuals.
The mechanism is tied to Anthropic’s growth: its board may add another 2% of shares for every 50% increase in company value above a set baseline. Anthropic has not yet disclosed that baseline, the governance rules or an implementation timetable. The fund’s equity will not be used for lobbying or political giving.
Equity as a source of funding
The shares are intended to finance grants, donations and direct support for individuals. Anthropic names AI’s effects on the labour market among possible areas of work. It previously committed $200 million to research and measures in this field.
