NASA’s request to companies

NASA issued its final request for proposals for commercial stations in low Earth orbit. Companies are being asked for plans covering design, construction, testing, certification and operation, together with transportation services for human spaceflight. Proposals are due December 8, 2026, and contract awards are expected in spring 2027.

The agency intends to use multiple firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery and indefinite-quantity contracts. At least two contractors would be supported through early development, followed by a competitive task order to select one or more teams for final design, testing, certification and services.

The transition to commercial stations

The final request follows two March requests for information, draft terms in July and industry consultations. NASA is preparing a transition from the ISS to commercial stations where it would buy research and crew-training services alongside other customers. Contractor selection and station certification are later programme stages.
